This specification has been designed
to take a broad view of sport and physical education. It provides
a progression from Key Stage 4 of the National Curriculum
and the GCSE exam course. It draws on the disciplines of physical
sciences, life sciences, as well as requiring an understanding
of historical development and cultural context applied in
a sporting and educational context.
Throughout the duration of the course
students will:
- develop an understanding of the
factors influencing performance and the ability to apply
these to a range of physical activities.
- develop the skills necessary to
analyse, evaluate and improve performance.
- develop an appreciation of social,
moral and cultural issues that affect participation and
performance in physical activity.
- develop the capacity to think critically
about the relationships between the different factors influencing
performance.
- develop the capacity to explain
current provision for participation in physical activity
in the context of social issues and global trends.

There is a high level of anatomy &
physiology in the course so the minimum requirement is B in
science. GSCE PE is not a requisite but is advisable. |

The AS PE course is divided between
theory and practical with the theory taking 60% of the marks.
The majority of lessons are theoretical. Practically the candidate
will be assessed on two out of three areas, performing, coaching/leading
and officiating. The candidate has the choice of doing this
in one or more sports e.g. performing in tennis and officiating
in football.
Unit 1
- Physiological and Psychological
factors which improve performance.
- Socio-Cultural and Historical effects
on participation in Physical activity and their influence
on performance.
Unit 2
Physical activity as a performer and/or in adopted
roles 2 of 3 from:
- Performer – student is assessed
on own performance in their chosen
sport
- Head/coach – student expected
to plan, co-ordinate and lead participants to demonstrate
core skills in a competitive situation
- Official – referee/umpire/judge
– show ability to officiate in a chosen
activity
Examination Details:
- Candidates submit one major project
that has a personal significance.
- The investigation includes a related
personal study that must be between 1000 and 3000 words.
Unit F441: Controlled Assignment
- Unit 1 – 2 hour written exam
– AS 60%/A2 30%
- Unit 2 – Practical coursework
component – internal assessment/external moderation
– AS 40%/A2 20%
- Unit 3 – 2 hour written exam
– A2 30%
- Unit 4 – Practical coursework
component – A2 20%
