This course encourages candidates to:

  • study psychological theories, research, terminology, concepts, studies and methods
  • develop skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation
  • develop an understanding of different areas of psychology
  • design and report psychological investigations and analyse and interpret data
  • develop an understanding of ethical issues
  • promote an appreciation and understanding of individual, social and cultural diversity
  • explore the relationship between psychological knowledge and its relationship to contemporary issues
  • develop critical and evaluative skills in relation to theory, empirical studies and methods of research
What are the entry requirements What is the minimum skills or qualification level the learner needs to start this course It is not necessary for students to have studied GCSE psychology before commencing work at AS level. However, pupils should have achieved grades A*-C in English, Mathematics and Science at GCSE level.

AS is examined in two examinations:
G541 Psychological Investigations: 1 hour: AS level 30%: A2 level 15%
G542 Core Studies: 2 hours: AS level 70%: A2 level 35%

A2 is further examined in two examinations:
G543 Options in Applied Psychology: 2 hours: A2 30%
G544 Approaches and Research Methods: 1 hour 30 minutes: A2 20%


Course Content

  • AS Core Studies: Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Social Psychology, Individual Differences
  • AS - evaluation of each of the studies, considering methods, perspectives and ethics
  • AS - practical work: four activities including self-reports and questionnaires; observation; experiment to analyse differences; correlation
  • A2: Psychology applied to: Health and Crime
  • Research Methods
