What will I do

An exciting and expressive course, channelling creativity and developing an enviable range of academic skills; individuality is encouraged and the focus is very much on the growth and maturity of the students as all-round musicians, preparing them for a wide range of careers and/or pastimes.

The trio of disciplines: performance, composition & historical study. Students will develop skills, knowledge and understanding across a wide spectrum of music history, along with the techniques to make them credible and confident performers and composers.

What are the entry requirements What is the minimum skills or qualification level the learner needs to start this course It is advisable to have achieved grade 5 both on an instrument/voice and music theory. GCSE music is not essential, but will have provided opportunities for students to experience performance and composition.

Style of Teaching and Learning

Performance: Externally examined live performance in school.
Composition: Internally marked coursework then moderated.
Historical study: 2-hour written exam in June.



Diverse range of tasks, exercises and mock exam situations. The staff pride themselves on the variety of approaches – adapted every year to suit the individual needs and learning styles of the students.

KS5 always have access to facilities in school, but it is a distinct advantage to have music software (such as Sibelius) at home or on a laptop.
Students would also be expected to take private instrumental lessons on their chosen performance discipline, these can be provided by the school, or organised privately

Future Opportunities Progression to further education, study or work Each year students go on to study Music, Music Technology and Musical Theatre at degree level.
Students are fully prepared for the move to further education and are supported and advised by staff as to appropriate courses and universities.
Universities and employers value Music A-level for its breadth of skills and production of confident and independent students.
