Brief Synopsis of the subject
For English Language Advanced Subsidiary
Level (AS), students will encounter a range of spoken and
written texts and learn about a series of linguistic methods
they may apply to the study of such texts. They will explore
several topics in detail to examine the relationship of Language
and Society, looking at Gender and Power in detail. They will
also produce their own written texts in different forms for
a variety of audiences and purposes.
For the full Advanced Level (A2),
students will study a further two topics in detail dealing
with Language Development, namely Child Language Acquisition
and Language Change. They will undertake a language investigation
of their own into an area of special interest to them. They
will also use their writing skills to produce an informative
media text about the topic they have investigated.
Aims of the course
- To encourage students to develop
an interest in and gain enjoyment from the many forms of
the English language, through developing linguistic knowledge,
conducting research of their own and acquiring advanced
analytical skills;
