Synopsis
The course is concerned with the creation and appreciation of theatre, involving the candidate’s own work, the study of written theatrical texts and the analysis of theatrical performances seen. There
is also exploration of theoretical writings on the subject.

Aims
The primary aim of the course is to encourage an interest in and an enjoyment of theatre. This will involve an understanding of a variety of theatrical forms, both read and seen, and will include the performance of theatrical pieces both from existing plays and the creation of original pieces. Candidates who are more interested in the design and technical aspects of theatre may specialise in
them and not submit acting as any part of their final assessment.

It is not essential to have studied GCSE Drama in order to do this course but it is a distinct advantage. An interest and a reasonable grade in either Drama itself, English Literature, Music or Art is advisable. Creativity, imagination and respect for other people are essential qualities.

Going to the theatre regularly is the best homework you can possibly do! Theatre is developing all the time and it is by watching other performances that you are introduced to new styles and techniques that you either like or hate! These opinions will then influence your own practical work. There are many trips arranged by the Drama Department but the more live theatre you see independently, the better.

Future Opportunities Progression to further education, study or work Career and Higher Education choices
This course is an obvious choice for anyone intending to make a career in the theatre or the media, but it is also useful as a supporting choice for anyone who enjoys theatre and for anyone who needs to present ideas in oral form – business presentations, law etc.

School Productions
The Department aims to put on at least one school production per year. This is usually performed in the Spring Term. However, there are many other opportunities for people to perform and direct.
