What will I do |
This qualification gives you the
opportunity to explore a variety of textile techniques leading
to the creation of a range of decorative surfaces, fabrics
or garments through drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking,
stitching and constructing. Throughout the course you will
explore drawing using a variety of methods and media. Underpinning
your work will be the use of sketchbooks, workbooks or journals.
The exploration of the work of other artists, designers and
craftspeople, from the past and recent times, is common to
all units. |

Assessment:

All units are internally assessed and
externally moderated. Areas

You will work in one or more areas
of textiles, for example:
- Constructed
- Printed
- Domestic
- Fashion

Skills and techniques:
You will need to demonstrate all of
the following skills:
- The elements of textile design
including shape, colour, texture, pattern, harmony, contrast
and repetition;
- An appreciation of the relationship
of form and function including the
ability to work to a brief;
- An understanding of various textile
methods, such as printing,
construction and stitching.
Knowledge and understanding:
Through your work you will need to
show:
- How ideas, feelings and meanings
can be conveyed
- Historical and contemporary development
including social,
environmental, cultural and ethical contexts of textiles
- Terminology relevant to your chosen
area of textiles
AS - Year 1
Unit 1:
Students produce a portfolio of evidence
covering a wide range of textile work, and at least one extended
project on a selected theme.
Unit 2:
Students receive an assignment in
February and select a question from an exam paper and produce
a volume of preparatory studies. There is a supervised five
hour practical exam.
A2 – Year 2
During the second year students will
be expected to develop a deeper understanding of Textiles
and broaden their historical and contemporary references with
analytical response.
Students are encouraged to expand
work suitable for specialist art progression purposes. Advice
and support is given to preparing art portfolios for Foundation
Art courses or UCAS university applications.
Unit 3:
Students produce a portfolio of coursework
around personal choice of specialist interest,
based on:
- Ideas or issues
- Concept or theme
- Supportive written work of 1000
– 3000 words is required.
Unit 4:
Students receive an assignment in
February and select a question to respond to. There is
a supervised 15 hour exam resulting in a completed final outcome |
