OFSTED VISIT
We received a visit from Ofsted in the
spring term of 2006: a team of four inspectors, led by Philippa Francis
HMI, were in school on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th March. The Governors,
the staff and I [writes the Headteacher] are all delighted
that the inspection team were able to endorse so many excellent aspects
of the work of the school.
The standards that the girls achieve at every level of the school
are, quite clearly, very high – "exceptionally high",
as the Report states – but we are also very pleased that the
good progress that girls make in relation to their prior attainment
is recognised – and, in fact, recognised as outstanding in the
sixth form. We are pleased that teachers "inspire and motivate
pupils" and that the development of independent learning is seen
to be actively encouraged. The girls’ personal development is
classed as outstanding; and the community is described as "a
stable and happy [one] in which pupils feel safe and establish good
and supportive relationships with one another and with their teachers."
Staff have very good knowledge of individual pupils and their needs,
and pupils "flourish". The range of extra-curricular activities
is noted as a strength of the school. It is these aspects of the school
that make it so special, and I am very pleased that these were identifed
by the inspection team. The inspectors also identified a number of
areas for further improvement, all of them reflecting the school’s
current plans or further developing aspects of current provision.
The new School Development Plan will include action plans for these
areas. We are particularly keen to continue to improve accommodation
in the school – classrooms, indoor sports facilities and sixth
form study and resource areas – and will continue to lobby for
the necessary capital funding to enable this to happen.
