During October 2008, we formed the
Green Team, a group of student volunteers representing all key stages
and led by sixth formers and staff. This team changes slightly each
academic year. We have a Green Team notice board used to communicate
our ideas to the school and encourage interest and suggestions.
The notice board can be found upstairs in the manor, outside the
Geography room. As well as the main notice board ideas and information
are communicated via newsletters, Mini Manners and classroom notice
boards.
Last November the Green Team split into groups to conduct a school
audit and each group researched one of the following nine key areas
and put together an action plan. An audit is carried out at the
start of each new academic year. In December we presented our ideas
to the rest of the school in a Green Team assembly; we also explained
how individuals could become more involved. A green non-uniform
day was held on 4th December to raise funds for our local school
environment – and £466 was raised – thank you!
Any suggestions to help improve our environment are always welcome,
whether from pupils, parents, staff or governors – please
contact Mrs Whan via email whan.n@we-learn.com

There is now a pond in the small Manor garden. Plants to encourage
butterflies and bees will also be planted in this area.

Conservation areas are not mown and used by the Biology department
for fieldwork
Morrison’s vouchers have been used to buy plant and herb

| ENERGY |
We have already received a report
from the County on our carbon emissions – which showed
our emissions as below average. The report suggested further
ways to improve and reduce our energy consumption whilst lowering
our emissions. The report has been passed to the Headteacher
and Business Manager and a poster showing our CO2 emissions
is available to see at Student Services.
Screen saver information on saving energy on all student network
computers
|
Signs to be put in each classroom
– lights, windows, computers and doors
Other possible initiatives to be looked at include:-
- an audit for low energy bulb usage
- self closing external doors
- thermostats fitted to all radiators/heaters
- an automatic computer shutdown
at the end of each day
- renewable energy on any new buildings
- thermal blinds for rooms
|
| WATER |
We have an old -fashioned system at
present. |
Turn off taps signs in toilet areas
Possibility of push taps and new toilet cisterns that use less
water to be considered. |
| TRANSPORT |
We now have a Travel Plan in place
– copies are available in the library and the staff room
The grant we have received for the plan is being used to construct
a bus shelter and cycle storage facility for pupils |
We are currently waiting to hear from
WCC about the possibility of a pedestrian crossing outside school
and safer cycle routes to school, as well as improved lighting
and safety on Shottery Fields. We have also asked that seat
belts be fitted to all buses used by pupils as well as coaches.
Car sharing whenever possible- staff and pupils.
Improving pedestrian access points to school. |
| HEALTHY LIVING |
Healthy Schools status has been achieved |
Education to be further integrated
into PSHE, PE and FT |
| GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES |
Already in many subject areas and assemblies |
Incorporate this into the curriculum
more
International links with India and China
Use of ELDs – Copenhagen and Kyoto |
| PUPIL PARTICIPATION |
This already occurs during lessons
held outside, assemblies, School Council meetings and for those
involved in the Green Team |
It is hoped that all students will
get the opportunity to calculate their own carbon emissions
during the academic year – Geography, IT, Science
Any suggestions are welcome from students
A green information area will be available on each classroom
notice board
Within lessons whenever possible |
