ECOSCHOOL

Green Team

Green team action plan 2010-2011
Current status: Silver Award

During October 2008, we formed the Green Team, a group of student volunteers representing all key stages and led by sixth formers and staff. This team changes slightly each academic year. We have a Green Team notice board used to communicate our ideas to the school and encourage interest and suggestions. The notice board can be found upstairs in the manor, outside the Geography room. As well as the main notice board ideas and information are communicated via newsletters, Mini Manners and classroom notice boards.

Last November the Green Team split into groups to conduct a school audit and each group researched one of the following nine key areas and put together an action plan. An audit is carried out at the start of each new academic year.

Any suggestions to help improve our environment are always welcome, whether from pupils, parents, staff or governors – please contact Mrs Whan via email whan.n@we-learn.com

KEY AREA WHAT THE AUDIT SHOWED ACTION TO BE TAKEN
LITTER

No major problem around school

Only area of concern is front Manor garden, where we suspect litter has been dropped by passers by

Maintain efficient use of litter bins

Conduct litter picks as necessary

Signs in each classroom and on main access doors
RECYCLING/WASTE MINIMISATION

Paper, glass, plastic and can recycling widely available

No composting scheme for food waste due to absence of kitchen waste

Printer cartridges and mobile phones collected by the IT department

Used Christmas cards collections promoted in parent and pupil bulletins

Global Study Planner - reusable exemplar was trialled by year 7, but was not successful

Black box scheme to be introduced in addition to the paper recycling to collect all recyclable materials (classroom based)

Signs in each classroom

Reduce the amount of paper used; use electronic mail instead

Ensure we have as many parent /student email contacts as possible
BIODIVERSITY/ SCHOOL GROUNDS

Lack of wildlife habitats

School grounds have great potential,

There is now a pond in the small Manor garden. Plants to encourage butterflies and bees will also be planted in this area.

Birch seeds to be propagated by the Science Club

Conservation areas are not mown and used by the Biology department for fieldwork

Morrison’s vouchers have been used to buy plant and herb seeds

PE department have provided gardening tools and equipment

Introduction of KS3 lunchtime club to make bird boxes (community link with local Care Home/Hospice to be established) – in liaison with the DT department.

Apple picking in autumn term – FT department/form rota.

Biology department may take part in RSBP Annual Bird watch with Year 7

The cottage garden will be looked at to see if who should take care of it

Bird cake and plastic feeders (recycled) – FT and DT departments.
ENERGY

We have already received a report from the County on our carbon emissions – which showed our emissions as below average. The report suggested further ways to improve and reduce our energy consumption whilst lowering our emissions. The report has been passed to the Headteacher and a poster showing our CO2 emissions is available to see at Student Services.

There is an automatic shut down of all curriculum computers at the end of each day - between 4:30pm and 6:30pm

Screen saver information on saving energy on all student network computers

We have school energy consumption figures available to analyse and act upon - computer based

Signs to be put in each classroom – lights, windows, computers and doors

Other possible initiatives to be looked at include:-

  • an audit for low energy bulb usage
  • self closing external doors
  • thermostats fitted to all radiators/heaters
  • renewable energy on any new buildings
  • thermal blinds for rooms
WATER We have an old -fashioned system at present. Turn off taps signs in toilet areas

Possibility of push taps and new toilet cisterns that use less water to be considered.
TRANSPORT

We now have a Travel Plan in place – copies are available in the library and the staff room

The grant we have received for the plan is being used to construct a bus shelter and cycle storage facility for pupils

Pedestrian access points into and around school have been improved using the yellow line system and the new paths

We are currently waiting to hear from WCC about the possibility of a pedestrian crossing outside school and safer cycle routes to school, as well as improved lighting and safety on Shottery Fields. We have also asked that seat belts be fitted to all buses used by pupils as well as coaches.

Car sharing whenever possible- staff and pupils.
HEALTHY LIVING Healthy Schools status has been achieved Education to be further integrated into PSHE, PE and FT
GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES Already in many subject areas and assemblies Incorporate this into the curriculum more

International links with India and China

Use of ELDs – Copenhagen and Kyoto
PUPIL PARTICIPATION This already occurs during lessons held outside, assemblies, School Council meetings and for those involved in the Green Team

It is hoped that all students will get the opportunity to calculate their own carbon emissions during the academic year – Geography, IT, Science

Any suggestions are welcome from students

A green information area will be available on each classroom notice board

Within lessons whenever possible
