Building a lifelong relationship with our Alumnae

Welcome to the Shottery Alumnae webpages. As we are approaching the 50th Anniversary of the formal opening of our Grammar School in 2008–2009, our aim is to outreach to all former students, parents, staff, friends and associates – to connect you to the evolving school, and to each other. As we reach a landmark time in the school’s history, we are keen to contact as many past students as we can, to enable you to find out as much as possible about the Society in every sense and to be aware of events leading up to and including the 50th Anniversary year. Contacting former students from the 1950’s to the present time, will rely on networking through the Press releases, and by you letting us know of contacts you have retained since you left school. Several year groups have kept in touch and had interim reunions and so many of you might be able to help us in locating other former students.

The concept of a Grammar School for girls was realised in practical terms largely by the efforts and enthusiasm of Mrs. Waldron, a former Mayoress of the town, who believed in equality of opportunity for girls as well as boys, to have this type of education, range of professions, business and challenging vocations.

From its formal inception in 1958–59, most students have left with a strong affection for their happy times and sound education at Shottery, as well as making life–long friendships. All former students in whatever capacity will have made a valuable contribution to family and community life and some have achieved distinguished career paths in a wide range of professions, business and challenging vocations.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Social events: through reunions either at school and other venues in the town, and in university cluster centres where there are a lot of recently left Shottery students.

Careers network: sharing of expertise of undergraduates, professional and vocational-employers with current Shottery students about Higher Education, career paths, presentations, etc (i.e. a career link programme).

Use of school premises for masterclasses, wedding receptions, conferences, International school visits e.g. the Japanese visits.

Open Days for past students to see the developments at the school combined with some social event.

Summer schools for current students run by young and/or Alumnae members.

Alumnae News: a special section initially in the Alumnae section of the school magazine with family news, articles on careeer paths, interviews with Alumnae members, etc.

Fundraising events for the Alumnae Society to be able to give School Prizes for achievement, bursaries to support current students on specific ventures etc., and for the significant objectives of the 50th Anniversary Campaign such as the plans for a new Sixth form block and Library and a Sports hall.

This is not an exhaustive list of ideas, merely a starting point.

We hope as many former Shottery students as possible will feel enthused to become connected with the Alumnae society. You will be actively encouraged to have ownership of the way the society develops by:-

inviting you to give regular ideas for social and fundraising events, reunion days/weekends.
to offer your help by becoming your year co-ordinate.
by submitting interesting Newsletter articles or offering to give Careers Link presentations or by giving interview practice to current student before they go into employment and/or onto University etc.
by offering to help organise events or to offer practical support, inform us of useful contacts, loaning of equipment etc.
by providing lively, but realistic ideas for the 2008 / 9 50th Anniversary.
